As a Resident Assistant, I get to plan educational programs for my residents. Yesterday, I sponsored a program called ‘Sustainable Smoothies’, where residents came to grab a mason jar, fill it with fruit, yogurt, and milk (or almond milk) and blend it into a delicious late night snack! Since I only had two blenders, there was a bit of a line- which encouraged conversation about healthy eating patterns. It also fostered a great discussion about the differences between cows milk and almond milk, and which is appropriate in different situations. Using mason jars instead of styrofoam or plastic cups inspired some sustainable practices as well. It was incredible to see how the things I’m studying apply to everyone’s daily lives, not just patients at hospitals or residents at nursing homes. Definitely having this program again next semester!
